Editors rely on an imperfect blend of news judgment, style conventions, audience metrics, usability studies, and occasional reader feedback to come up with a smart website design. But on the business side, publishers have a much more direct way to measure the effectiveness of ad placements on their sites.

November 17, 2010 by dbrendant, http://eyetrackingupdate.comInvestigators have been using eye tracking again, this time to determine how advertisers can use emotion and attention patterns to monitor consumers as they watch online advertisements. In the paper, authored by Thales Teixeira of Harvard Business School, Michel Wedel of the University of Maryland, and Rik Pieters of Tillburg University in the Netherlands, eye tracking was used to track a group of 58 students and staff members from a major Northeastern American university. Each participant was shown 28 video ads that were embedded in web pages as post rolls, or ads that are shown after the original video content.

We’ve written a few articles on website usability and how, in particular, people search the web, scanning their eyes across the screen to seek out the results relevant to their search. Many studies using eye tracking heatmaps have shown that web users tend to scan in an “F” pattern – that is, focusing mainly on the upper left side of the screen and scanning across horizontally and then down the left hand side to check what’s on the page. This makes sense. Think about when you do a search on Google –how do you approach the page?
